Biography

Dr. J. Jarpa Dawuni is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Howard University and a qualified Barrister-at-Law in Ghana. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Georgia State University and specializes in judicial politics, gender and the law, and women in the legal professions. She has authored and edited several books, including Intersectionality and Women’s Access to Justice in Africa and International Courts and the African Woman Judge. Dr. Dawuni has conducted extensive fieldwork in over ten African countries and held numerous prestigious fellowships, including the Fulbright Specialist and Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowships. She is the founding Director of the Howard University Center for Women, Gender, and Global Leadership and the Executive Director of the Institute for African Women in Law. A recipient of the Obama White House Presidential Award and the Women in Law Academia International Award, she leads an NSF-funded study on judicial diversity and has consulted for the UNDP and World Bank. She serves on multiple editorial and professional boards and is widely published and internationally recognized for her scholarship and advocacy.
