Marie Segrave

Track I - Women in Migration

Biography

Marie Segrave is a professor in the School of Social and Political Sciences at The University of Melbourne and co-leads the Gender, Violence, Borders research hub. Marie’s research has focused on the intersections of migration law and policy, labour exploitation and gendered violence. She has led groundbreaking national research on temporary visa holders, migrant and refugee women and domesticand family violence in Australia, and continues to challenge the ways in which migration status sustains the conditions of violence. Marie works closely with colleagues across a range of sectors to advocate for reform that prioritises women’s safety.

It remains critical for women across all fields, including in law, to support and recognise each other’s excellent work, especially the work that is most often so important for clients but largely unseen and less celebrated. Those who are most at risk and vulnerable rely on expert professional legal advice and recognising that this daily work of supporting people to navigate complex systems to secure their future safety is just as important as headline grabbing legal cases. This daily work is helping countless women daily on their pathway to safety.
