Biography

Sultana Tafadar is the first hijab wearing criminal barrister to have been appointed Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel) at the Bar of England & Wales, the highest rank of excellence in advocacy awarded to barristers who have rights of audience in the higher courts of England & Wales. Her appointment is testament to the fact that intersectional discrimination can be overcome.

Equal opportunities for women in legal professions are crucial for a diverse, inclusive, and just legal system. Women face significant barriers due to biases, discrimination, and inequalities. Improving their situation is essential for promoting gender equality and fairness. The Women in Law Initiative helps women network, mentor and support each other, and advocate for policy changes that promote equal opportunities for women in law.
